Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid for humans because the human body is not capable of making the fats. This means that we must supplement omega-3 through our diet. Omega-3 fatty acids consist of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Both EPA and DHA are typically found in fatty fish like salmon. On the other hand, ALA is most often found in plant sources, such as, flaxseed, walnuts, and soybeans. Because ALA is derived from plant sources, such as flax, vegetarians often rely upon flax seed oil as a source of omega-3 fatty acids even though it doesn’t contain within it any DHA or EPA. Humans are able to convert ALA into EPA then, subsequently, into DHA, but this process is extremely inefficient. This is because the enzyme that converts ALA into EPA is rate limiting, due to the fact that the same enzyme also binds to omega-6 fats (thus, the problem is significantly worse if your diet is relatively high in omega-6 fats).

The 4 types of African cichlid fish are omnivorous, herbivorous, micro predators as well as carnivorous.

What is aquarium salt? This kind of salt is like your table salt that you enjoy on your food, but it contains zero additives that harm fish. Additives that are present in your regular salt can easily make your fish sick. An even worse dilemma would be to add iodine or calcium silicate to your aquarium.
